It is an enthusiastic and conduct condition that influences an individualââ¬â¢s capacity to have a sound, commonly fulfilling relationship. It is otherwise called ââ¬Å"relationship addictionâ⬠in light of the fact that individuals with codependency regularly shape or keep up connections that are uneven, sincerely dangerous as well as harsh. The turmoil was first recognized around ten years back as the aftereffect of long stretches of considering relational connections in groups of alcoholics.Co-subordinate conduct is found out by watching and impersonating other relatives who show this sort of conduct. Who Does Co-reliance Affect? Codependency frequently influences a life partner, a parent, kin, companion, or collaborator of an individual harassed with liquor or medication reliance. Initially, mutually dependent was a term used to depict accomplices in concoction reliance, people living with, or in a relationship with a dependent individual. Comparable examples have been found in individuals involved with constantly or intellectually sick people. Today, be that as it may, the term has expanded to depict any mutually dependent individual from any useless family. What is a Dysfunctional Family and How Does it Lead to Co-reliance? A broken family is one in which individuals experience the ill effects of dread, outrage, torment, or disgrace that is disregarded or denied. Basic issues may incorporate any of the accompanying: â⬠¢An compulsion by a relative to drugs, liquor, connections, work, food, sex, or betting. â⬠¢The presence of physical, passionate, or sexual maltreatment. â⬠¢The nearness of a relative experiencing an incessant mental or physical disease. Broken families don't recognize that issues exist. They donââ¬â¢t talk about them or stand up to them. Accordingly, relatives figure out how to stifle feelings and negligence their own needs. They become ââ¬Å"survivors. â⬠They create practices that help them deny, overlook, or maintain a strategic distance from troublesome feelings. They separate themselves. They donââ¬â¢t talk. They donââ¬â¢t contact. They donââ¬â¢t go up against. They donââ¬â¢t feel. They donââ¬â¢t trust. The character and passionate improvement of the individuals from a useless family are frequently hindered Attention and vitality center around the relative who is sick or ddicted. The mutually dependent individual commonly forfeits their necessities to deal with an individual who is wiped out. At the point when mutually dependent people place different peopleââ¬â¢s wellbeing, government assistance and security before their own, they can lose contact with their own needs, wants, and feeling of self. How Do Co-subordinate People Behave? Mutually dependent people have low confidence and search for anything outside of themselves to cause them to feel better. They think that its hard to ââ¬Å"be themselves. â⬠Some attempt to feel better through liquor, medications or nicotine â⬠and become dependent. Related article: Shame is Worth a Try Others may create habitual practices like workaholism, betting, or unpredictable sexual movement. They mean well. They attempt to deal with an individual who is encountering trouble, yet the caretaking gets habitual and vanquishing. Mutually dependent people regularly take on a martyrââ¬â¢s job and become ââ¬Å"benefactorsâ⬠to a person out of luck. A spouse may cover for her alcoholic husband; a mother may rationalize a truant youngster; or a dad may ââ¬Å"pull some stringsâ⬠to shield his kid from enduring the outcomes of reprobate conduct. The issue is that these rehashed salvage endeavors permit the penniless individual to proceed on a damaging course and to turn out to be significantly progressively reliant on the unfortunate caretaking of the ââ¬Å"benefactor. â⬠As this dependence expands, the mutually dependent builds up a feeling of remuneration and fulfillment from ââ¬Å"being required. â⬠When the caretaking gets urgent, the mutually dependent feels choiceless and powerless in the relationship, yet can't split away from the pattern of conduct that causes it. Mutually dependent people see themselves as casualties and are pulled in to that equivalent shortcoming in the affection and kinship connections.

The order of the legal system helps Essay Example for Free
The request for the lawful framework helps Essay Lawful soundness guarantees that residents and organizations can deal with their issues productively (Lindquist Cross, 2010). The request for the lawful framework assists with ensuring that all cases will be heard similarly. Assemblies make laws that ensure residents and business, and when these laws are broken, the court framework is utilized to censure the guilty parties. The court framework is sorted out into two court structures, the government framework and state framework (Kubasek, Brennan, Browne 2009). There is a particular request to the association to the court framework and court procedures, and this request advances the solidness of the lawful framework. Each player in the court framework realizes what's in store in regards to their preliminary, and this consistency is imperative to guarantee that the lawful framework is reasonable for all members. Organizations and residents the same profit by a stable lawful framework on the grounds that the laws are known and questions are dealt with sensibly. The order of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act in 1999 is one model where an activity of the legitimate framework caused shakiness in business and society. The demonstration revoked the Banking Act of 1933, or the Glass-Steagall Act, that disallowed banks from selling protections (Barth, Brumbaugh Jr., Wilcox, 2000). It likewise revoked the Bank Holding Act of 1956 that continued financial separate from protection business. These demonstrations were revoked in light of the fact that scholastics indicated that banks being associated with the offer of protections and protection didn't cause the Great Depression of 1929 (Barth et al., 2000). The way that banks were permitted negligible deals of protection and protections with little issue additionally helped this demonstration to pass. This deregulation of banking added to the money related emergency of 2008. The annulment of the Glass-Steagall Act permitted speculation and business banking to blend, which prompted higher capital proportions a nd lower chance (Bordo, 2008). Subsequently, typical loaning rehearses were loose, and when the subprime contract advertise fallen in 2007, numerous banks felt the repercussions. Defaulted contracts affected the economy and caused a huge downturn that influenced residents and organizations the same (Bordo, 2008). Significant changes in banking guidelines through the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act is only one model where affirmed disappointment in the lawful framework lead to insecurity in business and society. This insecurity shows the significance of having consistency in the lawful framework. The Glass-Steagall Act had been set up for over sixâ decades when it was at last repulsed in 1999 (Barth et al., 2000). While look into demonstrated that repulsing this demonstration would help make a progressively widespread financial framework, the deregulation of the financial framework caused more debasement rather (Bordo, 2008). Banks were permitted to embrace significantly a larger number of exercises than previously. These additional exercises and the unclearness of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act assisted with adding to the flimsiness of the budgetary part. At the point when the lawful framework assists with adding to flimsiness, more residents become careful about both the lawful framework and the monetar y division. So as to stay away from this issue later on, the lawful framework ought to be progressively unsurprising by keeping guidelines that ensure the individuals set up.

The Rate Of Growth Of Coffee - 1114 Words
Expected rate of growth Coffee beverages are extremely popular in the United States, as they represent 75% of all caffeinated beverages consumed in the United States (Reynolds, 2014). Coffee shops make up the fastest growing restaurant business in the United States (Reynolds, 2014). VR Coffee Cafà © first year of sales is expected to be $850,000. We expect year two sales to increase 17.65% to $1,000,000 and year three to increase 20% to $1,200,000. We fully expect this large increase in sales because of two main reasons. First, we expect that our coffee shop will become increasingly popular in our community, due to word of mouth, increased store recognition, and increased store rating and positive feedback on social media apps like Yelpâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Because of this statistic, we be focusing on one establishment, at least for five years until we feel that establishment will not meet the fate of so many small businesses that came before it. After the five year waiting period, we will look to expand into new markets, especially markets that are populated by young adult male gamers. We will look to strategically place our new businesses next to where there they are gathered in a high population, particularly near military training bases. One of those strategically placed locations will most likely be Biloxi, Mississippi. Biloxi is home to Keesler Air Force Base, which is a training base for new Airmen. Another thing that makes Biloxi, MS such an attractive location is that it is located in a highly tourist environment. Having a steady flow of Airmen, as well as having a lot of tourists, will definitely help this potential VR Coffee Cafà © location gain positive traction in the community. If this location turns out to be a success, we will then be looking at more locations near military training bases. Other potential expansion locations, besides being in close proximity to military training bases, are next to large college universities or cities that have large populati on of college students. Potential locations include: Gainesville, Florida (Home of University of Florida), State College, Pennsylvania (Home of Penn State University), and Blacksburg, Virginia (Home of Virginia Tech).
Dance music and club culture Essay Example For Students
Dance music and club culture Essay However it was the island of Ibiza where dance culture really began to establish itself, originally an impoverished island with a poor economy reliant upon the trading of salt; Ibiza eventually became known as the clubbers hot spot, by the mid 1960s tourist attraction had grown as homosexuals, Americans, and the British began visiting the beautiful island. It is argued by many that the club culture stemmed from the attitudes and behavior of the hippies in the 1970s. We will write a custom essay on Dance music and club culture specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now The large clubs in Ibiza grew out of the hippy counter-culture; the club Amnesia was once an old working farm used as a venue for bohemian parties for hippies and artists. By the 1980s, Ibiza had been commercialized so much, it held some of the biggest nightclubs in the Mediterranean and became a very popular and appealing holiday destination for young British music lovers who could come away and forget all normality of life. With the experience of Ibiza, came the experience of drugs. Ecstasy went over to Ibiza in the early 1980s, following the same route as international travelers, homosexuals and new age culturalists. Ecstasy provided a world outside the normal where people were free to feel unconstrained to their everyday life and enjoy the music and social togetherness with others around In 1987, Margaret Thatcher was elected third team and Britain was experiencing a general depression. The Thatcher years had laid down beliefs of living in a meritocratic society, and fostered materialist dreams that many would not be able to fulfill. However, at the time, the club scene was spectacularly expanding; that summer thousands of British people flocked to Ibiza for an extended vacation in an alternate reality. The club counter culture was opposing the political values of the government and was fighting for collectivity; ecstasy provided an outlet for these entrepreneurial impulses, enabling people to do something about participation rather than observation. The impact of ecstasy is a personal one, yet it brought people together in an unexplainable collective consciousness. The summer of 1988 was renamed the second summer of love, dance culture was now popularly accepted and commercialized. After returning from Ibiza the British clubbers did not want to end the parties, drugs and feelings of hedonism, and dance culture was reborn. However, the rebirth of this club culture did not prevail for long, before it came under scrutiny by the media. The press created a moral panic over the acid house phenomenon and in August 1988, the sun newspaper ran an investigation on the drug scene in Richard Branstons club heaven. The paper began featuring a series of articles on the Evil of ecstasy-danger drug that is sweeping discos and ruining lives. The nation became panicked by this counterculture of youth dance and drug taking, and the conservative government claimed acid house was corrupting innocent youth. Producer Brian Whitehouse banned all videos or records featuring the word acid on BBC TV show, top of the pops, and high street shops such as top shop were no longer allowed to sell clothes with smiley faced logos. Although the youth of the culture were seen as clashing with mainstream political values, they did not support conflict and valued consensus and a coming together of society reflecting social values. Despite great efforts to prevent acid house from proceeding, the club culture continued and grew bigger and better into the early 1990s. The acid party scene was greatest in London, Manchester and Leeds yet soon spread throughout the whole of Britain. The police began an extensive series of raids throughout the cities, in illegal acid house parties that occurred in deserted warehouses. In 1990, there was a mass arrest in Leeds at warehouse where 800 people were arrested. Graham Brights 1990 Entertainments act increased the maximum fine for an un-licensed party from i 2000 to i 20,000 and six months imprisonment. Although his law was successful in finally decreasing the number of illegal raves, it was seen as a direct conservative reaction to the mass amount of huge illegal acid house raves of 1989. .ufa6ed0ddb1f0076d9db373368d9dfccd , .ufa6ed0ddb1f0076d9db373368d9dfccd .postImageUrl , .ufa6ed0ddb1f0076d9db373368d9dfccd .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ufa6ed0ddb1f0076d9db373368d9dfccd , .ufa6ed0ddb1f0076d9db373368d9dfccd:hover , .ufa6ed0ddb1f0076d9db373368d9dfccd:visited , .ufa6ed0ddb1f0076d9db373368d9dfccd:active { border:0!important; } .ufa6ed0ddb1f0076d9db373368d9dfccd .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ufa6ed0ddb1f0076d9db373368d9dfccd { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ufa6ed0ddb1f0076d9db373368d9dfccd:active , .ufa6ed0ddb1f0076d9db373368d9dfccd:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ufa6ed0ddb1f0076d9db373368d9dfccd .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ufa6ed0ddb1f0076d9db373368d9dfccd .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ufa6ed0ddb1f0076d9db373368d9dfccd .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ufa6ed0ddb1f0076d9db373368d9dfccd .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ufa6ed0ddb1f0076d9db373368d9dfccd:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ufa6ed0ddb1f0076d9db373368d9dfccd .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ufa6ed0ddb1f0076d9db373368d9dfccd .ufa6ed0ddb1f0076d9db373368d9dfccd-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ufa6ed0ddb1f0076d9db373368d9dfccd:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Music Summary EssayThe criminal justice bill expressed how strongly the government felt about the threat of dance culture with its combination of music, drugs and hordes of lusty people. However, by the time the bill was passed, dance culture and ecstasy had entered the mainstream as a result of Brights law creating the need for property licensed premises. The government versus dance culture title seems to end here. The establishment couldnt defeat the culture and so forced it into the mainstream. They couldnt shut down the dance, so they licensed it and let it free. Clubs were provided with later opening licenses to maintain legal requirements and free drinking water was available in all clubs as a safety precaution. Although the government didnt like what was going on, they couldnt prevent it and therefore ensured by bringing it into the mainstream, it was legal and safer. However according to Broughton and Bill by doing this club culture was no longer a form of rebellion or a counterculture of the youth, because it was legal, it wasnt as exciting. Although club music is still greatly enjoyed by many as a popular form of music, the culture surrounding the music in the early 90s has died. New forms of music such as the entrance of black rap, commercially known as R+B and adaptations of original house, funky house, are becoming increasingly popular; the novelty of club music has worn off and being replaced by these new forms of music. Even though club music has many followers, it hasnt the mass social involvement and impact upon life that it once had.

An Introduction to the Bell Curve
An Introduction to the Bell Curve A normal distribution is more commonly known as a bell curve.à This type of curve shows up throughout statistics and the real world.à For example, after I give a test in any of my classes, one thing that I like to do is to make a graph of all the scores. I typically write down 10 point ranges such as 60-69, 70-79, and 80-89, then put a tally mark for each test score in that range. Almost every time I do this, a familiar shape emerges. A fewà students do very well and a few do very poorly. A bunch of scores end up clumped around the mean score. Different tests may result in different means and standard deviations, but the shape of the graph is nearly always the same. This shape is commonly called the bell curve. Why call it a bell curve? The bell curve gets its name quite simply because its shape resembles that of a bell. These curves appear throughout the study of statistics, and their importance cannot be overemphasized. What Is a Bell Curve? To be technical, the kinds of bell curves that we care about the most in statistics are actually called normal probability distributions. For what follows weââ¬â¢ll just assume the bell curves weââ¬â¢re talking about are normal probability distributions. Despite the name ââ¬Å"bell curve,â⬠these curves are not defined by their shape. Instead, an intimidating looking formula is used as the formal definition for bell curves. But we really donââ¬â¢t need to worry too much about the formula. The only two numbers that we care about in it are the mean and standard deviation. The bell curve for a given set of data has the center located at the mean. This is where the highest point of the curve or ââ¬Å"top of the bellââ¬Å" is located. A data setââ¬Ës standard deviation determines how spread out our bell curve is. The larger the standard deviation, the more spread out the curve. Important Features of a Bell Curve There are several features of bell curves that are important and distinguishes them from other curves in statistics: A bell curve has one mode, which coincides with the mean and median. This is the center of the curve where it is at its highest.A bell curve is symmetric. If it were folded along a vertical line at the mean, both halves would match perfectly because they are mirror images of each other.A bell curve follows the 68-95-99.7 rule, which provides a convenient way to carry out estimated calculations:Approximately 68% of all of the data lies within one standard deviation of the mean.Approximately 95% of all the data is within two standard deviations of the mean.Approximately 99.7% of the data is within three standard deviations of the mean. An Example If we know that a bell curve models our data, we can use the above features of the bell curve to say quite a bit. Going back to the test example, suppose we have 100 students who took a statistics test with a mean score of 70 and standard deviation of 10. The standard deviation is 10. Subtract and add 10 to the mean. This gives us 60 and 80. By the 68-95-99.7 rule we would expect about 68% of 100, or 68 students to score between 60 and 80 on the test. Two times the standard deviation is 20. If we subtract and add 20 to the mean we have 50 and 90. We would expect about 95% of 100, or 95 students to score between 50 and 90 on the test. A similar calculation tells us that effectively everyone scored between 40 and 100 on the test. Uses of the Bell Curve There are many applications for bell curves. They are important in statistics because they model a wide variety of real-world data. As mentioned above, test results are one place where they pop up. Here are some others: Repeated measurements of a piece of equipmentMeasurements of characteristics in biologyApproximating chance events such as flipping a coin several timesHeights of students at a particular grade level in a school district When Not to Use the Bell Curve Even though there are countless applications of bell curves, it is not appropriate to use in all situations. Some statistical data sets, such as equipment failure or income distributions, have different shapes and are not symmetric. Other times there can be two or more modes, such as when several students do very well and several do very poorly on a test. These applications require the use of other curves that are defined differently than the bell curve. Knowledge about how the set of data in question was obtained can help to determine if a bell curve should be used to represent the data or not.

Audience Misdirection in Magic Acts
Audience Misdirection in Magic Acts For hundreds of years, magicians have performed acts which are perceived to be impossible, causing the viewer to question how the act was performed. The viewer would generally know that act performed by the magician will use some sort of trickery or illusion, but still viewers are usually unable to detect the change when it occurs, even when the trick is in full view of the audience. Sometimes when a magician performs a magic trick, he uses misdirection to trick the audience. The magician would usually draw your attention elsewhere while the trick is being performed to stop the audience seeing how it is done (Kuhn, Amlani lasting only 15 seconds, where the magician was to drop a lighter and cigarette into his lap without the audience seeing, causing the audience to think the items had magically disappeared. First the magician removes the cigarette from the packet and deliberately puts it in his mouth the wrong way round. He then pretends to light the cigarette, which enhances the a udienceââ¬â¢s interest in the mouth/cigarette region. Both magician and the audience then realise the mistake, and the magician turns the cigarette around with his left hand while keeping his gaze fixed on his hand and cigarette. During this time the magician drops the lighter into his lap, which is in his right hand. He then causes attention to go to the disappearance of the lighter by attempting to light the cigarette. When he is unable to light the cigarette, he looks to his right hand, snaps his fingers and waves his hand; pulling the audiencesââ¬â¢ attention to his right hand. While the audience are looking at the disappearance of the lighter in the right hand, the magician drops the cigarette from a height of around 15cm. He then turns his gaze to his left hand, and opens it to show that the cigarette is also disappeared. The magician uses gaze direction to disguise his actions while performing the trick (Tatler however the dropping of the cigarette was done in full vie w of the audience, from about 15cm above the table top, but this action is also not usually detected, usually due to gaze misdirection. This shows that the magician successfully misdirected the audienceââ¬â¢s overt and covert attention at the correct time during the trick, right when the disappearance occurs.

The impact of the emergence of China and India on the world economy Essay
The impact of the emergence of China and India on the world economy - Essay Example The concept of "emerging markets" was suggested by the International Finance Corporation to describe the developing economies with the extraordinary potential for rapid growth. According to statistics, majority of the emerging markets have transformed and improved their economic performance over the last two years. Moreover, the total output of the emerging markets (led by China) represents more than half of the global gross domestic product (Siddiqi 2006, p. 48). In 2005, the emerging markets combined GDP by $1.6 trillion outpacing the $1.4 trillion of advanced economies! China and India account for 20 percent of the total increase and have the share of 42% in total merchandise exports. United States, Eurozone and Japan are exporting more than 50 percent of total exports to developing countries. There are three factors which prompted the emerging markets on the higher growth: export-led growth fuelled by increasing American import demand, increased commodity prices and low interest rates (Siddiqi 2006, p. 49). ... India and China have contributed 30 percent of the global growth between 2000-2005 and their share in the world trade has increased from 7 percent to 15 percent. They have doubled their contribution to world economy in only five years. International corporations are increasing their operations in China and India. Moreover, India and China are also increasing their activity on the international business arena. For example, India's Vedanta Resources invested in Zambia's Konkola Copper Mines and China National Petroleum Corporation has actively invested in African oil-production countries (Siddiqi 2006, p. 51). The stable commodity markets, reflecting the demand for energy and natural resources, have enabled China to overtake Japan as the second largest oil importer after United States. BRIC countries account for 20 percent of world oil demand, while Indian intellectual property second has ensured that its government takes the lead in the negotiations within World Trade Organization. India's annual growth rate is at least 6 percent and even before 1991 when India's finance minister began to dismantle the post-colonial license Raj of state regulation of the economy, the national growth was above 3.5 percent a year (Luce 2006, p. 23). Despite of the rapid growth, more than one-third of global poor population lives in India. Even with a such a high number of poor people, India might capture the large share of the global software, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, and automobile components markets. India's growth derives from the service sector: information technology, back office processing, outsourcing, finances, medical services, media services and consumer industry. China's growth, on the contrary is based on manufacturing

Opposing Views of the Effectiveness of Monetary Policy Essay -- Econom
Opposing Views of the Effectiveness of Monetary Policy Monetary policy is a powerful governmental weapon which has historically proven that it is difficult to wield. This difficulty is one of the reasons why some economists doubt the effectiveness of monetary policy as a whole. These economists find that monetary policy is difficult to implement because of estimation problems and time lag problems, as well as cyclic effects. They also point out situations in which monetary policy may not work at all. On the other hand, some economists swear by monetary policy as one of the most influential economic tools. These economists show that controlling money supply in America is a relatively young idea, and is developing rapidly. They also attempt to show that money supply affects many variables in our economy, and that it is useful in more situations than the anti-monetary policy economists, Keynesian economists, would have us believe. To gauge the ineffectiveness of monetary policy some economists call our attention to the great depression. How could governmental monetarists allow one quarter of the country to be unemployed[1] or for one third of commercial banks to be put out of business by ââ¬Å"bank panics?â⬠[2] People who took part in these bank panics were not only taking out their ââ¬Å"ownâ⬠money, but were taking out possible loans for others (the amount they took out multiplied by the money multiplier) which eventually became 31% of the total money supply.[3] The economist best fit to use monetary policy would be able to tell the future, or at least provide a pretty good estimate. These estimates are very difficult when sometimes the results of policy actions are not seen for months to over a year. Corrections of these ... ...ed: Mishkin, F.S. Oppisition Arguments Essay
Animals deserve the same rights as people because they can feel pain; therefore, everyone in the world should become vegetarians. Animals do not deserve the same rights as humans. If so then we should give plants and vegetables rights as well. We kill a lot more plants then we do animals, so I believe that everyone should eat strictly meat only. America should not act as a ââ¬Å"World Policemanâ⬠because it has enough domestic issues of its own to deal with. Even though America has a lot bases throughout the world, this does not mean that we are the world Policeman. We are just helping our allies so we could keep trading with these countries for natural Resources. Learn to Calculate Percent Change
Percent increase and decrease are the two types of percent change, which is used to express the ratio of how an initial value compares to the result of a change in value. A percent decrease is a ratio that describes a decline in value of something by a specific rate, while a percent increase is a ratio that describes an increase in the value of something by a specific rate. The easiest way to determine whether a percent change is an increase or a decrease is to calculate the difference between the original value and the remaining value to find the change then divide the change by the original value and multiply the result by 100 to get a percentage. If the resulting number is positive, the change is a percent increase, but if it is negative, the change is a percent decrease. Percent change is highly useful in the real world, for example,à allowing you to calculateà the differenceà in theà number of customers who come intoà your store daily or to determineà how much money youââ¬â¢d save on a 20-percent-off sale. How to Calculate Percent Changeà Suppose the original price for a bag of apples is $3. On Tuesday, the bag of apples sells for $1.80. What is the percent decrease? Note that you would not find the difference between $3 and $1.80 yielding and answer of $1.20, which is the difference in price. Instead, since the cost of the apples has decreased, use this formula to find the percent decrease: Percent decrease (Older ââ¬â Newer) à · Older. (3 ââ¬â 1.80) à · 3 .40 40 percent Note how you convert a decimal into a percent by moving the decimal point twice to the right and tacking on the word percent after that number. How to Use Percent Change to Alter Values In other situations, the percent decrease or increase is known, but the newer value is not. This may occur at department stores that are putting clothing on sale but donââ¬â¢t want to advertise the new price or on coupons for goods whose prices vary. Take, for example, a bargain store selling a laptop for $600, while an electronics store nearby promises to beat the price of any competitor by 20 percent. You would clearly want to choose the electronics store, but how much would you save? To calculate this, multiply the original number ($600) by the percent change (0.20) to get the amount discounted ($120). To figure out the new total, subtract the discount amount from the original number to see that you would only be spending $480 at the electronics store. In another example of altering a value, suppose a dress regularly sells for $150. A green tag, marked 40 percent off, is attached to the dress. Calculate the discount as follows: 0.40 x $150 $60 Calculate the sales priceà by subtracting the amount you save from the original price: $150 - $60 $90 Exercises With Answers and Explanations Test your skills in finding percent change with the following examples: 1) You see a carton of ice cream that originally sold for $4 now selling for $3.50. Determine the percent change in the price. Original price: $4Current price: $3.50Percent decrease (Older ââ¬â Newer) à · Older(4.00 - 3.50) à · 4.000.50 à · 4.00 .125 12.5 percent decrease So theà percent decrease isà 12.5 percent. 2) You walk to the dairy section and see that the price of a bag of shredded cheese has been reduced from $2.50 to $1.25. Calculate the percent change. Original price: $2.50Current price: $1.25Percent decrease (Older ââ¬â Newer) à · Older(2.50 - 1.25) à · 2.501.25 à · 2.50 0.50 50 percent decrease So, you have a percent decrease ofà 50 percent. 3) Now, youre thirsty and see a special on bottled water. Three bottles that used to sell for $1 are now selling for $0.75. Determine the percent change. Original:à $1Current:à $0.75Percent decrease (Older ââ¬â Newer) à · Older(1.00 - 0.75) à · 1.000.25 à · 1.00 .25 25 percent decrease You have a percent decrease of 25 percent. Youre feeling like a thrifty shopper, but you want to determine the altered values in your next three items. So, calculate the discount, in dollars, for the items in exercises four through six. 4.) A box of frozen fish sticks was $4. This week, it is discounted 33 percent off the original price. Discount: 33 percent x $4 0.33 x $4 $1.32 5.) A lemon pound cake originally cost $6. This week, it is discounted 20 percent off the original price. Discount: 20 percent x $6 0.20 x $6 $1.20 6.) A Halloween costume usually sells for $30. The discount rate is 60 percent. Discount: 60 percent x $30 0.60 x $30 $18
